University of Missouri Extension Council urges stronger 4-H and community programming in Kennett area

Ally Shearer, a member of the University of Missouri Extension Council, addressed the Kennett City Council to introduce the council’s work and to seek input on what programs the city would like to see.
“We are an extension of the University of Missouri. I like to phrase it as we are community engagement. We are here to offer programs through the University of Missouri to help better our community,” Shearer said. Shearer said the council aims to revive a local 4-H program, expand nutrition programming in schools, and partner with existing county specialists and farm managers to support fairs and livestock exhibits.
Shearer named local specialists available to the region and said the council holds open meetings on the second Tuesday of each month; she invited council members and residents to attend. She also noted upcoming classes, including an estate-planning course at the library and a horticulture class at the Extension office.
Council members did not take formal action on the presentation. Shearer asked the council for suggestions about how the Extension Council can better assist Kennett and said the council would reach out to school officials and neighboring county specialists as part of rebuilding 4-H programming.
