Kennett’s July 4 fireworks set for Kennett Airport; show funded by donations, officials warn on sales to minors

Kennett’s Independence Day fireworks will return to the Kennett Airport with an anticipated start time of about 9 p.m. on July 4, Fire Chief Jake told the City Council on July 2.

“The fireworks display will take place at the Kennett Airport as it has in previous years and would anticipate a start time of approximately 9PM on Thursday, July 4,” Jake said. He said the show this year was funded entirely by community donations and that the total cost for the display was $5,000; after this year the account will have about $2,500 remaining.

Jake reviewed safety preparations: the fire department will provide on-site fire protection, Assistant Chief Roberts will oversee fire operations in Jake’s absence, and the police department will handle public-safety enforcement around the show. He also noted city consumer-fireworks regulations and hours: “Fireworks may be discharged starting now, within the city limits from 2PM until 10, through July 3. And then on the fourth, they may charge discharge between 2PM and 11PM, per se ordinance.”

Officials said the mosquito-spraying contractor will spray July 2 and again July 4. Police and fire staff reported confiscating fireworks sold to people under age 16 in recent enforcement actions; Chief King Wilson said the city seized several packages and will continue to enforce age restrictions and vendor compliance.

Jake asked residents to follow safety guidance and invited donations to help fund future displays; he directed donors to the city clerk’s office.
