The Kennett City Council approved the finance committee's recommendation to allocate $45,000 in available funds to three local nonprofit programs.
Finance committee members told the council the city was limited by repayments of previously overpaid funds and had $45,000 available this year. The committee recommended $25,000 to Oaks, $15,000 to Helping Hands and $5,000 to VNA's senior companion program. A councilmember proposed an alternative split (30/10/5) but the motion for 25/15/5 was moved, seconded and approved by the council.
Council discussion included a member saying Oaks serves many senior citizens and expressing a preference for a larger share; another member said Helping Hands also provides valuable services. The presenters clarified that the VNA allocation would support a senior companion program and not the organization broadly.
The council recorded the motion as passed at the meeting.
