Council approves MoDOT-funded purchase of four accessible vehicles for transit

The Excelsior Springs City Council on June 30 approved an ordinance authorizing the mayor to apply for federal financial assistance and execute resulting contracts with the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission to purchase four wheelchair-accessible vehicles.
Public Works Director Chad Burton told the council the MoDOT capital assistance award covers two buses priced at $105,567 each and two minivans priced at $73,590 each, totaling $358,314. “The federal share of this expenditure is 80% at $286,651 and the city share is 20% at $71,663 which was allocated and approved by our capital improvements authority,” Burton said.
The grant was identified as part of the city’s $53.39 capital assistance program and all four vehicles are wheelchair accessible, Burton said. The council moved the ordinance to second reading and then approved Ordinance No. 25-06-05 by roll call; council members voting yes included Councilman McGovern, Councilman Haney, Councilman Speer, Mayor Pro Tem St. John and Mayor Spahn.
The city's capital improvements authority had previously allocated the 20% local match, and Burton said the city would proceed with the purchase under the grant terms. The ordinance authorizes the mayor to apply for federal funds and to execute any contracts resulting from such application with the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission.
