Council trims solid-waste contract and lowers household trash rate; bulky-pickup change shifts collection approach

The council approved two linked actions on Sept. 2 that change city solid-waste service terms and household fees. First, Resolution 1608 authorized an addendum to the city's solid-waste services agreement with Redgate Disposal removing the annual curbside bulky pickup from the base contract; staff said Redgate's revised low price for curbside trash and recycling is $20.80 per month. Molly McGovern said the bulky-item drop-off center and scheduled Friday bulky pickups for callers will remain in place and that Redgate will still service dumpsters associated with the center.
Separately, the council adopted Ordinance 25-09-01 to amend the municipal fee schedule for trash rates. The monthly base residential charge will drop from $25.00 to $23.50 for one trash cart and one recycling cart; the fee for each additional cart will increase from $3 to $7. City staff explained the higher extra-cart fee helps control usage and funds staffing for the recycling and yard-waste centers; bulky-item collections from the center are included in the new rate. The ordinance takes effect Oct. 1.
Both measures passed by unanimous roll-call vote. Staff said they expect to monitor customer behavior and costs as the new fee structure and contract addendum take effect.
