Council approves 20-year streetlight contract with Ameren Missouri

The Excelsior Springs City Council on Aug. 18 approved Ordinance No. 25-08-04, extending a 20-year contract with Union Electric Company doing business as Ameren Missouri for street and public-place lighting. Mike Edwards of Ameren told the council the contract is an extension of the existing arrangement and spells out distinctions between customer-run lighting and utility-owned systems. "There's a customer run and then a utility owned because you guys have a lot of the downtown decorative lighting that you guys own," he said. The ordinance sets terms for the city's lighting by electricity, permitting Ameren to erect, operate and maintain poles, lines, cables and related equipment as necessary for the contract. Council members moved the ordinance to second reading and approved the measure on a roll-call vote; all council members present voted yes. Council discussion was brief and procedural; no substantive changes were made to the contract at the Aug. 18 meeting. The approval formalizes the city's relationship with Ameren for street-lighting service and associated maintenance for the next 20 years.
