Council backs Hellebuch Park grant application; city wins $22,000 cost-share for hazardous tree removal and moves forward with Gentry Park dedication

The Bridgeton City Council unanimously approved a resolution supporting the Parks and Recreation Department’s application for Municipal Park Grant Commission funds for improvements at Hellebuch Park. Resolution 25-04 was moved by Council member Hood and approved without recorded opposition.

Parks and Recreation staff also reported a cost-share award from the Missouri Department of Conservation (Tree Resource Improvement and Maintenance program) for approximately $22,000 to support hazardous tree removal; the staff noted the program is now administered as a cost-share rather than a grant. Parks Director Kane said the funds may be used on hazardous trees in parks and on street or right-of-way trees, not limited to park property.

Council members discussed a proposed dedication sign for the Gentry Park playground in honor of former Mayor Terry Briggs. Parks staff presented two mock-ups — “Terry Briggs Playground at Gentry Park” and “Mayor Terry Briggs Playground at Gentry Park” — and said either option would include wording identifying Briggs as mayor. Council members voiced unanimous support and staff said the sign will be ordered and a ribbon-cutting/dedication tentatively planned for late September.

Parks staff also reminded residents of the seasonal dog swim at the outdoor pool, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 6, from 1 to 3 p.m.; proof of vaccination is required and preregistration is $10, $15 at the gate.

The council’s action on the Hellebuch Park resolution is limited to supporting the Parks & Rec department’s grant application; any award would require subsequent budgeting and contract steps.
