The Mexico City Council approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to execute a task order with LUMIX Electrical for downtown streetlight rewiring, with a not-to-exceed cost of $30,000. Mr. Slayton introduced the item and explained the funding was included in the current fiscal-year budget to begin rewiring and to create a wiring map and documentation to make the system easier to maintain. Mr. Slayton said the $30,000 is "maximum not to exceed" and that the work could come in lower.
Mr. Slayton showed a photo of the downtown light pole wiring and described decades of piecemeal wiring repairs; he said some LED drivers and components are reaching their end of life and that the work may involve conduit or saw cutting in places where new conduit is required. The city's street division will perform concrete cutting and related work while LUMIX handles electrical scope, and the city hopes to avoid removing light posts by pulling wires through existing access ports.
Council members discussed project duration and potential cost; staff estimated the full program could take two to three years to complete. The council moved to read and pass the resolution (Bill No. 2025-60) authorizing task order 2025-51 with LUMIX Electrical, and the measure passed unanimously. The resolution sets an initial budget allocation to begin rewiring and map the downtown system so the city can better maintain lights and replace failing LED components in future years.
