Council approves $21,845 purchase of dirt-sifter attachment for cemetery operations

Staff member Chad Adler told the council the FY2024–25 capital outlay included a $34,400 line for a dry dirt shelter that had not been spent because staff successfully used an existing storage option (the Quanta Hut). After a third-quarter fiscal review, staff recommended using the funds to buy a dirt-sifter attachment for the skid steer. Adler said the sifter "significantly improves the efficiency by reducing the labor required ... to a single operator" and that it would reduce the need to buy pre-mixed clean fill over time.
Staff reported they received two bids; one bid failed to meet specifications and the other — from Ken Burns Inc. of Manchester, Iowa — met specs at $21,845 for the Viper model. A council member moved to approve the purchase and the motion passed by roll call.
Council and staff said the purchase is intended to improve the quality of cemetery services and reduce recurring labor and material costs. The approval directs staff to complete the procurement and implement the attachment in the cemetery maintenance program.
