Council approves MOU with Main Street Mexico to plant and maintain 36 downtown trees

The Mexico City Council on Aug. 25 approved a memorandum of understanding with Main Street Mexico to coordinate planting and maintenance of trees in the downtown area.
Public works and planning staff and Main Street representatives presented a joint plan identifying 36 locations for street trees. City staff member Chad Hunberger told council, “we have identified 36 places to put trees downtown,” and said engineering staff and Main Street volunteers helped select appropriate sites.
Hunberger described a joint maintenance plan in which Main Street will assist with watering and initial upkeep and city staff will provide additional watering and support. He estimated the initial watering load at roughly three hours of volunteer time, plus about one hour of city staff time per watering cycle during establishment, with ongoing maintenance handled jointly.
The council approved the resolution authorizing the city manager to sign the MOU and asked staff to coordinate implementation details. Councilmembers praised the project as a public-realm improvement and encouraged timely planting and maintenance.
