Council schedules hearing and approves zoning code update to reinsert junkyard rules into Chapter 42

The Mexico City Council held a required public hearing on Aug. 25 and adopted an ordinance amending Chapter 42 of the city’s zoning code to add definitions and operational standards for automobile wrecking shops, salvage yards and junkyards.
City staff explained the changes are primarily a reintroduction of standards that existed in the city’s former code but needed to be carried forward into the updated code. The amendments cover fencing, site appearance and hours of operation for facilities classified as junkyards or automobile salvage operations.
The code update was presented so the public could provide input as required; staff said the item had been discussed previously in July but the hearing required under the code was not held at that time. Staff members noted that the Department of Natural Resources has strict requirements that affect such operations.
No members of the public spoke during the hearing. Council proceeded with two readings and passage of Bill No. 2025-546, the ordinance amending Chapter 42, article 7 (Industrial Districts), to incorporate the definitions and conditions for wrecking and salvage yards into the current zoning code.
