County staff presented a vendor estimate in the mid- to high-thousands — the presentation referenced figures “probably 15 to 20 to 24,000” including adding a linked carbon-monoxide detector for the basement and required monitoring phone service. The vendor’s quote also included monthly monitoring and a semiannual fee for upkeep; staff said the phone line needed for 911 notification would cost roughly $277 per period under one option.
Commissioners discussed possibilities to eliminate or consolidate existing services (for example, fire-extinguisher checks) if the new vendor could bundle those tasks, and whether grant funding might cover part of the cost. County staff said they had not yet received responses from several other potential vendors and that the safety committee and Treasurer Kathy should be further consulted on grant options.
Given the cost and that the vendor’s prices were firm only through June 13, commissioners agreed to table the decision and re-bid or revisit the item in the July budget cycle so the expense can be planned into next year’s budget rather than paid from the current year’s reserves. No contract was approved at the meeting.
