Banner County Board of Equalization sets five-minute limit for property tax protests

The Banner County Board of Equalization voted to set a five-minute time limit per person for property tax protest hearings, the board decided during its June 3 meeting.
The limit was adopted to help schedule the protest hearings, Casey, Banner County assessor, told the board, noting the office had received many protest filings and that scheduling needed to be practical. The board discussed a three-minute default but agreed five minutes would better accommodate large parcels or businesses that may need more time.
The change applies per parcel and does not require a property owner to appear in order for a protest to be acted on, the board clarified. The board recorded roll-call approval of the time-limit motion.
The assessor said the office is sending forms this year to let owners indicate whether they will attend and to collect contact details; hearing dates are already scheduled for July 8. Board members emphasized that questions from the board may follow a speaker’s allotted time.
The board did not change the protest filing deadlines during the meeting. The assessor said those deadlines and the final hearing schedule will be posted with the forms and hearing notices.
Banner County staff will publish the hearing procedures with the notices and include the five-minute time limit per parcel.
