Representatives from Colonial Life presented a proposed group term life product to the Banner County Board of Commissioners on July 15 that would provide a $10,000 baseline policy paid by the county for about $2 per employee per month, with voluntary options to purchase higher amounts.
Mike Broomfield and Nick Lees of Colonial Life explained the plan would be a guaranteed‑issue group product allowing employees to add up to $75,000 additional voluntary coverage, spouse coverage and dependent coverage, in some cases without health questions. Broomfield said the county could offer the $10,000 baseline policy at about $2 per month per employee (approximately $24 per year) and that employees who participate would receive a 15% discount on additional products.
Commissioners expressed concern about uptake and staff time required to administer an additional benefit; one commissioner said employee interest appeared limited and declined to move forward. "I'm not, at this point in time, interested in engaging in that," a commissioner said. The board took no formal action to adopt the Colonial Life product.
Colonial Life representatives said they would follow up if the county changes course; the county made no commitment to add employer‑paid basic life coverage or to change existing voluntary options.
