Board accepts downtown parcel donation to create parking and event space

The Board of Aldermen accepted the first reading of a bill authorizing the city to accept a donation of a small, landlocked parcel downtown, with the intent to convert it to parking and occasional open-space uses for events.
City staff explained the parcel sits between a row of Main Street commercial buildings and the alley to the bank and is currently unused and ‘busted up,’ holding water in places. Staff said the parcel had been discussed previously with the late owner, Jim Kizzick, who had planned an improvement that would have become a city lot; the property is again being offered for donation.
The proposed plan is to accept the property and then coordinate with adjacent property owners to create a conjoined parking area that could be used for parking, food trucks and special events. “The idea would be, like, parking for a lot of the time, but it also could be a decent size open space to have something down there as well for special events,” a staff member said.
The bill (B25-13) passed first reading and will return for a second reading by title only at the next regular session. No purchase price was discussed; the item concerns a donation and potential future improvements to make the parcel usable for events or parking.
