Aldermen discuss speed humps, one-sided parking and digital speed signs for residential stretch

Alderman Skinner asked city staff about installing seasonal speed humps on a residential stretch that includes Woodbury and surrounding streets, saying the short driveways and parked cars make the area hazardous for children.
City staff described the city's process: residents can submit a traffic-calming request form, devices are placed in spring and removed in fall, and availability depends on requests. "Currently, there has been no request made, so we would have availability," a city staff member said. Staff said the city has approximately five traffic-calming devices available; some neighborhoods, such as Rosewood, have purchased their own devices.
Skinner also asked about digital speed signs provided by the state. A city representative said five of six radar sign boxes have arrived and the city is coordinating bracket installation with the manufacturer.
Board members discussed the trade-offs of one-sided parking versus speed humps. One alderman said restricting parking to one side could create congestion because of many vehicles and short driveways; another said speed humps would at least slow some drivers.
Staff said locations raised by the board can be added to this year's list if the board requests them; deployment typically begins May 1.
No formal motion was made; the discussion resulted in staff agreement to add the requested stretch to the list of candidate locations for seasonal traffic-calming devices.
