Council approves limited fireworks for Bluff Burnouts event June 28

Event organizer Brian Wells told the Poplar Bluff City Council on June 16 that Riverside Hot Rods plans the Bluff Burnouts event on June 28 and requested permission to discharge a small number of fireworks inside city limits at the conclusion of the national anthem.
“Just gonna have a couple go off right when the national anthem ends,” Brian Wells said, adding the plan is not a grand fireworks show but a small celebratory launch. Wells said the event will feature a cruise-in and a burnout contest in a contained environment surrounded by concrete blocks; participants will compete for a prize funded by community donations.
Wells told the council he had coordinated with the chief of police and that the organizers have a safety plan that includes security, EMS and fire response as needed. He said parking surfaces would be protected by repaving in 8-inch sections and adding rubber over the top; crews would remove concrete blocks and clean the lot the following day.
City staff told the council that the organizers had been cooperative with coliseum staff and the police department. The council voted to approve the fireworks discharge permit for June 28; the motion passed unanimously. The approval is limited to the small number of fireworks described in the application and the safety measures presented; no expanded fireworks show was authorized.
