The Clayton Plan Commission on June 16 approved a staff recommendation allowing non‑textual decorative window decals at King's Eye Diner in the Clayton On The Park building at Bonham Avenue and South Brentwood.
Staff said the property — in a PUD — contains a mixed‑use building and that the restaurant tenant received a violation notice dated May 14 for already‑installed decals. "The applicant is seeking approval to retain the window decals depicting chess pieces that will align with the restaurant's branding, but they contain no text or logos to qualify as signage," staff said. Staff reported the decals occupied 20% or less of window area and did not obstruct window transparency, and recommended approval as submitted.
Applicant Joe Caradona, appearing by Zoom, said he had nothing to add. Commissioners who commented praised the design and the balance between decoration and visibility. "I think it is the best addition to that facade that I've seen in years," Commissioner K. Bridal said, noting the decals allow views both in and out. The commission moved, seconded and approved the staff recommendation.
No further conditions were attached in the Plan Commission action; the item will proceed per normal enforcement and permit processes for the PUD.
