Police brief council on license-plate-reader (LPR) use; staff to return with policy details

Police Chief Munsterman briefed the Warrensburg City Council on license-plate-reader (LPR) technology and the department’s intent to provide additional information to guide council deliberations on fixed cameras.
Munsterman said LPRs have been used for many years and recounted prior uses in criminal investigations, including homicide work. He said the technology is widespread — for example, toll systems and state enforcement commonly use plate-reading cameras — and that the department intends to be "open and transparent" about the system and provide a staff report to inform council discussion.
"We're trying to be as open and transparent about that system as we can, give you the information that you need to make that determination," Munsterman said. He added that the department would share information and that staff would return to council with an objective analysis before the council takes action.
Council did not take formal action; Munsterman’s remarks were informational and the matter will return for additional staff analysis.
