The Rolland City Council approved a contract award to McQueen Emergency of Eureka for 10 sets of MSA Globe turnout gear at a total cost of $56,250, with the purchase funded by a $27,900 ARPA grant through the Department of Homeland Security plus a city match.
The fire chief said the department sought bids and received one responsive bid from McQueen Emergency. He explained turnout gear refers to the firefighter coat and pants worn for structural firefighting and said the department prefers the MSA Globe athletic turnout gear for its lighter weight, comfort and safety features.
The chief described the department’s replacement cycle: the National Fire Protection Association recommends a 10‑year service life for turnout gear; the department replaces roughly one‑third of its stock each year. When new gear arrives, older sets move into backup service and are ultimately destroyed after the recommended service life or when contaminated beyond reuse. The chief said backup gear is kept for incidents that contaminate primary gear or to outfit new hires while their new gear is sized and issued.
Council moved and seconded the purchase and approved it by voice vote.
