Board approves remodel, roof color condition for 241 Maynard Street

The Historic District Review Board approved exterior alterations at 241 Maynard Street, a single‑family residence in the Westside Guadalupe Historic District, during the Sept. 9 meeting. The proposal included a 67‑square‑foot west elevation addition, a 86‑square‑foot portal, a single arched front door, relocation of a kitchen door and window, new exterior stairs, replacement of an existing gray shingle roof with standing‑seam metal in a barn‑red color, and construction of yard walls with pedestrian and vehicle gates within district height limits.

Applicant Richard Martinez described replacing a chain‑link fence, building a portal and bump‑out to give the house more “Santa Fe” character, and using a barn‑red metal roof intended to mimic a weathered rust patina rather than a bright red. Several board members said they preferred a deeper, brownish weathered red or bronze‑toned color rather than a bright red; they also noted the wall height on one street face would step down per zoning limits and that any exception for a higher wall would require a separate process and fee. Member Cherry moved to approve the application as recommended by staff with a condition that if the roof is red it should be a deep, brownish, weathered red and that the final roof material and color be submitted to staff for approval; the motion passed on roll call.
