Committee approves $250,000 addendum to Heartland House agreement for homelessness services

A Springfield City Council committee on Aug. 12 approved an addendum to the city’s agreement with Heartland House, authorizing up to $250,000 for homeless services for the period March 1, 2025, through Feb. 28, 2026.
Alderman Gregory praised Heartland House staff and volunteers and asked the council to view the funding as part of a broader, multi-partner response to a rising unhoused population. “Our unhoused population has risen some 200%,” Gregory said, and he credited Heartland House staff for their ongoing outreach and service while urging coordination to fill remaining gaps.
Alderman Nutriano and others also thanked outreach workers and neighborhood volunteers who had organized cleanups in areas of concern. Director Posey and staff present told committee members they are coordinating response efforts in neighborhoods with concentrated unhoused activity.
The addendum passed the committee on a motion for consent and a voice vote; councilors asked for continued reporting on outcomes and coordination with outreach partners.
