Organizers Ask City to Make Homelessness and Recovery Resources More Visible: Brochures, Bulletin Boards, Navigators

Representatives from community groups told the Springfield City Council on Aug. 19 that many residents in crisis do not know about services already available and urged the city to make resource lists more visible and accessible. Rick Chatterjee, treasurer of the Land of Lincoln DSA, referenced a Sangamon County Recovery Oriented Systems of Care presentation that listed extensive recovery and social-service resources. He said the county list was thorough but hard to find on the county website and praised a county-produced brochure. Chatterjee asked the city to produce a similar concise resource document and distribute it widely at bus stops, libraries, parks, places of worship, micro-pantries, gas stations and cafes. Chatterjee and other speakers suggested low-cost, immediate steps such as freestanding community bulletin boards and printed brochures, while noting longer-term solutions would include peer-led navigators and expanded social-worker capacity. They offered to help the city bridge the gap between existing services and the people who need them. Council members did not take formal action during the meeting; community organizers asked the city to use its resources to make existing services easier to find and to work with volunteer groups on distribution.
