Springfield Library to Launch Mobile Branch Sept. 8; Annual Report Delivered to Council

Dr. Harrison, director of the Lincoln Library, told the City Council on Aug. 19 that the library's mobile branch will begin service Sept. 8 and that the schedule includes stops in all 10 wards. Harrison said the vehicle already looks "like a library on wheels," with bookshelves and computers, and that the library will monitor stops for demand and pivot the schedule if needed. The council was told that organizers expect to hold a grand opening but have not set the date. Harrison also presented the library’s 2024 annual report to the council. She said the report is required by Illinois statute and that the library’s calendar page on the city website will display the mobile branch schedule. She noted the library is offering amnesty for fines under $50 during library card sign-up month and that residents can apply for library cards online or at the mobile branch. Council members responded positively; Alderman Gregory said he was pleased the mobile branch scheduled stops across all wards and planned to share the schedule with constituents. The council did not take formal action; the library will implement its stated launch and public schedule.
