Frank Carrara, a member of the Oak Lawn Lions Club, told the Village of Oak Lawn Board of Trustees on Feb. 25 that the Lions seek the board’s support for the annual Helen Keller 5K walk and run and thanked the village for past assistance.
The trustees approved the event — scheduled for Sunday, April 27, 2025, beginning and ending at Richards High School and running through the Wolf Wildlife Area — and waived village-incurred fees totaling $5,010.78. The request was listed on the board’s consent agenda and was approved as part of that package after trustees removed two other items for separate handling.
Carrara, who said he has lived in Oak Lawn since 1968 and represents the Oak Lawn Lions and District 1A Lions, said the club has run the fundraiser for 15 years and partners with local school districts and the park district. "What I'd like you to do for me today is to approve, whatever it is that we have to do to get this thing accepted, this walk and run," Carrara said. He told trustees the Lions support local fire and police recognition efforts and run a Leo Club (junior Lions) affiliated with area schools.
The consent agenda listed the Lions event request and an explicit waiver of the $5,010.78 in village fees related to the Helen Keller 5K. Trustees voted to approve the consent agenda items (with items I and J removed for separate votes) and the waiver was adopted as part of that approval.
The consent agenda also included a separate request for a Saint Germain 5K on April 12, 2025, with a requested fee waiver of $4,076.14; that item was also approved on the consent agenda. Trustees did not debate either event at length during the meeting.
The board moved on to other business after the approvals and later scheduled an executive session to discuss closed meeting minutes and pending litigation.
Frank Carrara provided flyers and informational materials to the board at the meeting; trustees did not ask for further information during the public comment period.
The board’s approval allows the Oak Lawn Lions Club to proceed with event planning and the village fee waiver; details such as required permits, road closures, or insurance conditions were not specified in the public record for this meeting.
