Committee to study Fabick Nature Preserve outlook improvements after $20,000 capital allocation

The Arts and Recreation Committee agreed to continue planning improvements to the outlook area at Fabick Nature Preserve after staff outlined current work and a $20,000 allocation in the 2025 capital plan to study improvements.
Committee members and staff described recent work funded through multiple budgets, including invasive species removal tied to a Missouri Department of Conservation grant and planned staircase replacements at both Bud Wylde Pavilion and Fabick. Committee staff said contractors completed clearing that improved sight lines toward the lake and that tree pruning and removal of dead trees are planned under the grant.
Members discussed possible uses for the $20,000, including simple benches or movable seating at the overlook, repair or remortaring of stone wall posts, and replacing cedar fencing that currently serves as fall protection on top of an exposed stone wall. Committee members raised safety and liability concerns and noted a local requirement that fall protection be in place for drops of roughly 24 to 30 inches.
After discussing options and placement, a committee member moved to carry the outlook-improvement item forward to next month’s agenda and to include input from other staff (including Mike Abbott and Dan Howard); a second was recorded and the motion passed on a voice vote. Staff said they would survey the outlook, review fence and wall repair options, and return with placement and cost recommendations.
