Fenton board directs playground RFP for Budweil, backs several parks initiatives

After discussion about locations, access and ADA needs, Alderman Hills moved that the city not commission Cochran Engineering to locate a playground site; Alderman Wissbrough seconded and the board carried the motion. The board then discussed preferred siting and near-term needs; staff and aldermen indicated a preference for a grassy area near Budweil's restrooms and parking to maximize use and accessibility. The board approved a motion to issue an RFP for playground design and construction at Budweil; the motion was made by Alderman Hill and seconded by Alderman Wissbrough. A motion record indicates the board expects proposals to include ADA-compliant options and pricing bands.
The parks committee also recommended a public contest to rename Budweil Annex Park; staff said the contest would appear in the city newsletter and website and recommendations would move to the Park Committee and then the Board of Aldermen for final action.
Other approved items included: acceptance of a donated memorial bench to be installed in Benton City Park (donor will pay the bench cost and Public Works will install it); approval of a special-event permit for Saint Paul Catholic Church for a walk/run in Fenton City Park (the group will pay pavilion fees and provide required insurance); and committee endorsement for public input on adding picnic seating at each end of the boardwalk (staff noted flood risk and asked whether to secure benches to concrete pads).
On park infrastructure, the committee recommended pursuing a Missouri American Water hydration-station grant to replace a wall-mounted fountain in Budweil Park with a standard drinking fountain; staff explained the popular wall-mounted option with dog bowl was more costly and freestanding dog-filler units are less compatible with available components. Staff indicated they will pursue grant options where feasible.
The board's motions were approved by voice votes; the RFP and park-permit items will move to staff implementation.
