Aldermen approve boardwalk seating, hydration-station grant application and event request at Budweil Park

Fenton aldermen on Feb. 27 approved several Parks and Recreation Committee measures aimed at improving Budweil Park and the city’s riverfront path.
The board approved a recommendation to provide seating at both ends of the boardwalk along the Merrimack River. The motion passed after discussion about flood risk, bench orientation and options for removable or securable seating; Alderman Hills moved and Alderman Harrell seconded the motion. Committee members discussed using existing bench frames from the public-works shop, mounting options and composite decking to reduce maintenance.
The board also approved a staff application for a hydration-station grant through Missouri American Water to replace the existing wall-mounted water fountain in Budweil Park (the approved replacement is a standard water fountain without a bottle-filler). The motion to seek the grant was made by Alderman Hill and seconded by Alderman Jokers; members discussed whether to wait and install a play-area hydration station when a future playground is added, but the approved grant application is specifically to replace the current wall-mounted fountain.
Other committee actions approved by the board included: initiating a public input contest to rename the Budweil pavilion (committee will review suggestions and select a name), and approving a special-event permit for a walk/run requested by St. Paul Catholic Church to use Fenton City Park. All motions were passed by voice vote. The Parks and Recreation Committee also announced officers for the tree advisory board: Gary Johnson (chair), Mary Heinemann (vice chair) and Kathy Cease (secretary).
Ending The council directed staff to proceed with the approved seating plans, apply for the hydration-station grant, run the pavilion-renaming contest and process the special-event permit; specific installation timing and materials will depend on weather and procurement.
