The North Chicago judiciary committee on Feb. 17 received an update on enforcement actions at Brookstone at Coles Park, where city staff said the Brookstone Benoit Group has not fully implemented a court-ordered corrective action and safety plan.
Chief of Staff reported that an adjudication judge imposed a $1,500 fine, payable within 30 days, and ordered the company to reappear on May 8 to discuss outstanding elements of its security plan. The city asked for a fine after finding the company slow to deploy required Friday and Saturday security personnel, the chief of staff said.
The chief of staff told the committee the company was nearly two months late filing its annual landlord license application, unit reinspections from the prior calendar year were not completed, and the owner owed about $29,000 in licensing and inspection fees. City attorneys said they have discussed recourse with the surety company that backs a $7,300,000 bond and requested a written response from the surety; staff said litigation or a new adjudication hearing is possible if the company does not resolve the deficiencies.
Police data and additional lighting were cited as positive signs; staff asked the police department to assemble crime statistics so the council can review recent trends around the property. The committee closed after the update; no additional council action was recorded at the meeting.
Action taken in adjudication: a judge fined the Brookstone Benoit Group $1,500 and ordered the company to reappear on May 8 for a status review.
