Local health advocate urges residents to use 988 for behavioral-health crises

Adam Pauley addressed the North Aurora Board during public comment to urge residents to use the 988 crisis line and to describe local behavioral-health initiatives.
"988 is a national number that you can call, and it's not just suicide. It is for substance abuse as well," Pauley said. He identified himself as the president of the regional school board, a member of the 708 mental health board for Aurora Township and the Kane County overdose task force, and said the health department is running a public-awareness campaign about 988 through September.
Pauley said the county has launched additional services, including a behavioral-health 360 self-help tab and an overdose case review board; he said he will serve on the advisory body. He spoke personally about losing his sister to addiction and urged elected officials to take deliberate action to prevent future deaths.
The board did not take action on Pauley’s remarks during the meeting; his comments were entered in the public-comment record.
