Addison approves variance to allow second 93-square-foot wall sign for MW Components

The Village of Addison approved a variation to its sign ordinance on Monday, Jan. 20, allowing MW Components at 196 North Addison Road to install two identical 93-square-foot wall signs — one facing Addison Road and a second facing Lake Street.
The variation modifies Village of Addison sign ordinance section 27-505(d)(2) to allow a second non-illuminated wall sign where only one is normally permitted. The request was considered at a public hearing before the combined committee meetings and was included on the board's consent agenda for final approval.
Why it matters: The property sits along Addison Road and faces Lake Street but is partially separated from Lake Street by the Village Green Memorial Park. Under code, a business normally is permitted one wall sign per major street front; corner lots can qualify for two signs. The applicant requested an exception because the building is large and the second sign would help visually break up the façade and identify the business from either direction.
Mike, a staff member who presented the petition in the applicant's absence, told the board that the building is substantial in size, "The length of the building is 682 feet long along Addison Road, and the width is about 282 feet long." He described the request as two identical 93-square-foot signs and noted that without a variation the petitioner would be allowed a single 100-square-foot sign on Addison Road.
The petition was reviewed by the village's Commercial Industrial Commission on Dec. 11. "They unanimously recommended approval of this," Mike said, and the committee described the proposal as consistent with prior approvals for properties facing Lake Street. A member of the committee added, "I think the signage looks good. We have set a precedence. We do have other buildings in town that face Lake Street that have additional signs more than just one."
At the public hearing there was no testimony for or against the request. The committee motion to close the hearing passed and the variation was subsequently approved as part of the consent agenda vote.
The ordinance variation allows two wall signs, each 93 square feet in area, for the property commonly referred to as 196 North Addison Road (PIN 03-28-112-030). The signs will display the name "Addison Fasteners" visible from both Addison Road and Lake Street, per the materials presented to the village.
