Addison amends building code to allow shipping-container training facilities in M-2 zoning

The Village of Addison approved an ordinance May 5 to amend the building code to permit intermodal shipping containers to be used in the design and construction of fire and law enforcement training facilities, limited to the M-2 zoning district.
Staff explained the change inserts provisions that appear in the 2024 International Building Code into the local code before the village formally adopts the 2024 I-Codes later this year. The amendment provides architects and engineers a pathway for design and restricts shipping-container uses to training facilities; it does not authorize residential or general commercial construction using containers.
Village staff and attorneys reviewed the ordinance and recommended approval. The board voted to waive second reading and adopted the ordinance by roll call; trustees voted yes.
The ordinance was prepared by village attorneys and staff; no implementation timeline or permit fee changes were discussed at the meeting.
