Police presenter Roy told trustees the technology is intended to reduce dangerous vehicle pursuits by allowing officers to attach a GPS tracking puck to a fleeing vehicle from a safe distance. "Our goal lately has been trying to reduce the amount of fleeing and eluding cases...This equipment will help us safely take offenders into custody," Roy said. He described prior steps including training on tire deflation devices and pursuit policy changes and said the StarChase system would add a non-pursuit option.
The board moved and seconded the resolution to approve the quote and waive bidding. In the roll-call vote following discussion, all trustees present voted yes and the resolution passed.
The action authorizes procurement and does not change pursuit policy; no follow-up report date or implementation timeline was specified during the meeting.
