The Webster Groves Architectural Review Board approved a renovation and rear addition at 400 North Bombardt Avenue, stipulating several design and finish items for the construction documents.
Homeowner Keith Moore and the project team discussed how the addition’s windows would be finished and how the new exposed concrete foundation walls would be treated. Board members requested that windows and doors on the sided addition receive visible trim (sills/heads) rather than only a flush frame, and they suggested finishing the exposed concrete foundation walls so the new work visually matches the existing stone foundation. The board listed acceptable options as parging and paint, a stone-form liner cast, or a stone veneer; the homeowner said painting the foundation to match the existing house was feasible.
Board member Carol Dunkey also asked that two casement windows be added to the kitchen area on the side elevation to relieve the large expanse of siding; the homeowner said those windows had already been discussed with staff and would be incorporated. The board asked the applicant to close off the visible area beneath a side entry porch with lattice to match the front porch.
During discussion the board recommended that applicants consider how the foundation meets grade; they suggested either additional steps in the formwork or furring down the face so siding can extend closer to grade for a cleaner appearance. The homeowner said he will confer with his architect and contractor and that several finish options are under consideration.
A motion to approve 400 North Bombardt with the listed understandings passed at the meeting.
