Webster Groves Sustainability Commission elects John chair and Anna vice chair

The Webster Groves Sustainability Commission selected Commissioner John as its new chair and Commissioner Anna as vice chair following an open nomination and hand-raise vote during the commission’s regular meeting.

The leadership contest centered on questions of continuity and term limits. Outgoing chair Jeff said he would refrain from voting except to break ties and urged the commission to choose officers who could "hit the ground next month." Commissioners discussed the chair’s duties, including running meetings, working with staff to set agendas and serving as a primary liaison to city council and staff.

The commission debated whether the vice chair traditionally ascends to the chair and noted the board-and-commission handbook’s guidance that leadership terms should be one year. Commissioner John explained his interest in the chair role by citing his experience as vice chair and his work on the commission. Commissioner Karen Anderson was nominated but declined the vice chair nomination; Karen accepted a nomination for chair earlier in the process but the vote went to John. Anna ultimately accepted nomination and was elected vice chair.

Commissioners clarified responsibilities that accompany the chair role: running meetings, coordinating with the staff liaison (Sean), and being looped in for budget or spending decisions when they arise. Commissioners also said any member can request items to be placed on the agenda and that subcommittees are commonly used to develop detailed recommendations for the full commission.

Outgoing chair Jeff said he has served multiple terms and thanked commissioners for their service; he encouraged continued participation and pledged to remain involved informally.

The new leadership will take effect immediately for the commission’s upcoming meetings and event planning.
