Why it matters: updating municipal lighting rules can reduce light pollution, make enforcement language clearer and centralize standards that currently are spread across the code. Commissioners said the change would make the rules easier for residents and developers to find and for staff to administer.
Commission discussion and next steps Commissioners discussed whether the proposal should be presented jointly with the Sustainability Commission; several members recommended joint sponsorship so the recommendation would come from both Sustainability and Green Space. Commissioners also emphasized that the draft is likely to change during legal and staff review and that it would be appropriate for the commission chair or a designee to send the final recommended language to the city staff liaison once the commission has voted.
Corinne said she had prepared a short letter and the ordinance language and offered to continue championing the proposal as it goes to Sustainability. Members agreed that the Sustainability Commission will decide independently whether to endorse it.
Outcome and process The commission held a formal vote to forward the draft to Sustainability and send it to the city staff liaison; the motion passed. The commission noted the staff and legal review will likely alter the draft before any council consideration.
Looking ahead Commissioners said they expect to present a concise pitch to the Sustainability Commission at its next meeting and then to transmit the recommended language to the city staff liaison for further processing and possible referral to council.
