Plans advance for Jerry Welch Sculpture Garden; designers propose metalwork and signage

Commission member Rick Irwin presented early renderings for the Jerry Welch Sculpture Garden and said production could proceed once design details are finalized and approvals secured.

Irwin summarized the design approach — a combination of CNC-cut signage and some wrought-iron filigree — and estimated design work would take "at least another month" before production; he suggested the actual installation could occur in spring or summer depending on fabrication choices. "The actual production of it looks like it'd be CNC cutouts... with the exception of the scroll or filigree work that Andrew would do that's mostly wrought iron," Irwin said.

Commissioners recommended reviewing and cleaning nearby sculptures before installing new elements, consulting with Parks & Recreation staff (Scott) and involving the city’s PR person for event announcements when the project is ready. Webster Arts expressed interest in participating in planning. No formal vote was taken; Irwin said he would continue to gather design details and coordinate a planning group and timeline.

Why it matters: the naming dedication and small site improvements will alter a visible public space and require coordination with parks staff, fabrication vendors and the existing sculpture owners.

Next steps: finalize design, consult Parks & Recreation, assemble a planning group and determine production vendor and schedule. The commission suggested a PR rollout once details are confirmed.
