Staff previews ArcGIS story map to track comp plan goals and implementation

Planning staff presented a draft ArcGIS story map to the Planning and Zoning Commission on Jan. 13 designed to showcase the comprehensive plan, annexation history and implementation goals and to provide a public-facing progress tracker.
Sarah (staff member) demonstrated the story map's features, saying it combines historic maps, pins for points of interest and layers that show annexation dates and district boundaries. She said the project will include images and narrative elements aligned with the comp plan and that she hopes to publish the story map by May — the one-year anniversary of adopting the plan.
Commissioners discussed using the story map as an accountability tool. One commissioner asked for the comp plan’s implementation tracker to be incorporated so departmental responsibilities and timelines are visible; Sarah said she would work to add a tracker and to show which department is responsible for each action. Commissioners suggested including data such as library district boundaries and identified economic-development targets (for example, the Fifth Street corridor study and large shopping-center redevelopment opportunities) to make the map helpful for both the public and staff.
Sarah said she is working on goals that include code changes to encourage multimodal and mixed-use development and an economic-impact study for the Fifth Street corridor. She asked commissioners for patience while she continues to compile the content and said the story map will be updated as projects move forward. The commission asked that the one-year progress be summarized at the May meeting as an overview of accomplishments and next steps.
