Parks commission sets special review as master plan nears final draft

The commission—s parks director said the consulting firm (PDS) will provide a draft March 14 and a finalized plan in April to inform the capital improvement sales tax proposal. Commissioners said they want the commission to prioritize projects and identify which items should be funded with the proposed sales tax and which might be pursued through other grants or funding sources.
Commission members highlighted a short list of building-related projects that will carry price tags: the pool-house renovation, the city auditorium, Miller Post Cabin and Cole Miller House. The commission noted that some items in the master plan are conceptual and lack cost estimates; PDS provided estimates for a subset of projects so the sales-tax committee would have cost guidance.
Commissioners said the commission—s input will be incorporated into the final plan before the consultant—s presentation to the city council. One commissioner suggested the commission identify a top three to five priorities to help target grant-eligible items and those most important for the sales-tax campaign.
Commissioners also discussed the plan—s recommendation that drew concern from members: a proposed parking area at the Miller Post site. Commissioners said they will submit suggested edits to the master plan draft and can bring recommendations to city council for formal support or adoption.
The commission expects to distribute the consultant—s draft to members when it arrives and to schedule a special meeting in early March to allow time for review before the April finalization and any council presentation.
