Gautier ends local emergency after winter-storm sheltering; council thanks volunteers and partners

The Gautier City Council on Feb. 4, 2025 voted to terminate the local emergency that the city had declared for winter-storm response after staff and community partners opened shelters and assisted residents.
City staff requested the council make a formal motion to end the emergency declaration. Councilman College moved to terminate the local emergency; Councilman George seconded the motion, and the council voted in favor.
Mayor and council members used the meeting to thank the organizations and volunteers that supported the city’s emergency response. The mayor said First United Methodist Church opened a shelter and provided electricity and water; the mayor also credited local volunteers, the Jackson County Chamber, the homeless coalition, and retail staff who assisted. "We save lives by opening that shelter," the mayor said, noting one resident required hospital transport during the storm.
City staff also noted ongoing community efforts unrelated to the emergency: the city’s food-collection drive with Extra Table and local partners to collect granola bars through Feb. 27 to support food pantries and school backpack programs. City staff invited residents to drop off donations at city locations and thanked community businesses for participation.
The council did not discuss reopening the emergency or continuing formal emergency authority; the termination motion was procedural and carried by the council.
