City honors pickleball community and player who performed lifesaving CPR

The Liberty City Council recognized members of the local pickleball community Wednesday and singled out player Adam Vance for performing CPR that city staff say helped save fellow player Bob Oates.
Mayor Greg Knutson introduced the item as a “feel-good story” and asked players to come forward. Council members and speakers described witnessing emergency responders treating Oates and credited Vance with providing CPR before emergency personnel arrived. Assistant Chief and other staff said Vance’s aid meant Oates was breathing by the time he was placed in the ambulance.
“To actually have Bob here standing next to me today is a miracle,” Vance said during the recognition, adding that he teaches CPR and credited his pickleball teammates for being part of the effort. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t know how to play pickleball to begin with. I probably wouldn’t have been there.”
The council and attendees applauded the pickleball community and those who called for help. Officials used the recognition to highlight bystander CPR statistics cited by Vance from the American Red Cross: that public cardiac events occur in a minority of settings and survival rates are limited without prompt intervention.
The council did not take formal policy action in connection with the recognition. The mayor and staff encouraged residents to attend community safety events and noted the city’s appreciation for first responders.
