Council honors first responders and public works after dramatic rescue and major snow response; organizers tout Reel Liberty film festival

Mayor Greg Pewds and councilors opened the Jan. 27 meeting by recognizing public works crews for their snow removal after a record storm and by commending police and firefighters for a recent water-rescue captured on body camera footage.
Mayor Pewds said public works had 19 vehicles out, clearing 380 lane miles, enabling residents to travel within the city by the Monday after the storm. Lance Fanhauer, manager of maintenance operations, and Joaquin Luis, a public works employee who also assisted an elderly resident with shoveling, were introduced and briefly thanked.
Chief Young and assistant chief Tyler Hobbs described a body-camera video of a vehicle that slid down an embankment into water at the intersection of B Highway and H Highway. Officer Zack Morrison and firefighters, including Captain Lance (identified in the video), used a glass-cutting tool to free the driver and retrieve an infant from the rear seat; both mother and infant were transported to the hospital and released with no injuries, staff said. Council praised the rapid response and said the crew had received national recognition for the rescue.
Council also heard a recap of the inaugural Reel Liberty (Bridal/Reel Liberty) film festival, organized by the Liberty Arts Commission in partnership with B&B Theaters and other community groups. Organizers and staff thanked volunteers, businesses and performers and said the event was a successful community showcase.
