The Liberty City Council unanimously approved a final development plan filing Jan. 27 to allow site work for a 400,000-square-foot addition to the Ford Motor stamping plant at 2401 Plummer Road.
City planning staff described the submittal as phase five of the plant’s growth that would expand the facility to more than one million square feet overall. The filing allows grading and site work to move forward; Ford will return later with exact construction costs and a jobs estimate, councilors said.
The application included requests for variances related to fence height and a request to pay a fee in lieu of planting certain trees on site; the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended unanimous approval on Jan. 14, according to city staff.
Council members praised the plant’s long-term presence in the community and noted the facility’s contributions to the school district and local economy. The council’s action at this meeting was to approve the development filing; substantive construction approvals and specific economic figures are expected at a later date.
