Moyock resident urges larger lot sizes and business-focused growth, cites steep property-tax increase

Greta Nelson of Moyock spoke during the public-comment portion of the Jan. 6 Currituck County Board of Commissioners meeting, asking the board to prioritize agriculture, consider larger mandatory lot sizes and focus more on business growth.
Nelson, who identified herself as a member of a farming family, said farmland should be protected because it “represents a way of life, a source of substance, and a vital component to our community’s character.” She asked the board to revisit the county’s minimum-lot-size guidelines, noting that “years ago, Currituck County standard size for a lot was 3 acres.”
Nelson also urged the commissioners to foster economic development that produces jobs and services rather than only residential housing. She said her county property-tax bill on the same parcel increased by $2,516 between 2014 and 2024, which she characterized as “over a 400% increase in 10 years,” and asked the board to be mindful of tax impacts on residents on fixed incomes.
Nelson closed by asking commissioners to listen to constituents and balance growth with preservation; she was the only person signed up for public comment that night.
