Trenton City Council on March 17 approved acceptance of a $450,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from Wayne County for Slocum Park and authorized the mayor to execute the agreement. The council also approved awarding the Slocum Park improvements contract to J.G. Morris Jr. following a four-bid competitive process.
City Administrator Dean Creech described the Slocum Park project as “almost shovel-ready,” and said the city will contribute about $78,000 to complete the planned improvements. Parks and Recreation Director Tim Beaker said four bids were received (J.G. Morris Jr., KAB Enterprises, C and S Construction Management, and Premier Group Associates) and that the city engineer recommended J.G. Morris Jr. as the lowest responsive bidder.
Beaker described planned work at Slocum Park: converting former tennis courts into four pickleball courts, adding a basketball court, resurfacing a baseball field, building an ADA-accessible playground with safety surfacing, and adding sidewalks and a new path.
Council approved both the CDBG acceptance and the contract award; the transcript records the motions as moved and supported and ultimately “unanimously so ordered.” The project will be funded through Wayne County CDBG funds with the city responsible for the stated local contribution and potential overages.
The contract award follows a standard review and reference-check process by the city engineer; Beaker confirmed reference checks were completed as part of the engineer’s recommendation.
