Ferndale City Council on May 20 adopted a resolution authorizing temporary display of a progress rainbow flag at City Hall and a rainbow pride flag at Gary Park’s Hero Memorial Garden from June 1 through June 30, 2025.
The resolution cites the city’s exterior flag policy, adopted Jan. 11, 2021, which allows additional flags to be displayed outside city property upon council resolution and specifies that such displays are government speech and not a public forum. The resolution takes effect immediately.
Why it matters: the vote authorizes symbolic displays of support for LGBTQ+ Pride month at two city-managed locations and clarifies that the authorized displays do not create a limited public forum for other uses of city property. The city also noted that the Woodward median north of 8 Mile is state property; the rainbow flag flown on that median will continue as in prior years.
Council adopted the flag resolution as part of the consent agenda. The motion to approve the full consent agenda passed with unanimous votes from members present; one member was absent.
