Council approved the special-event permit for the 15th annual Ferndale Bridal, scheduled for Saturday, May 31, 2025, and authorized a temporary suspension of the city's downtown patio zone for the event footprint.
Event and organizer: Julie Musick, who identified herself as the Ferndale Pride / Ferndale Bridal organizer, told council the event has expanded to a footprint that now extends beyond the city's patio zone and that the festival is explicitly non-alcoholic on the main festival grounds: "We are the only pride of our size that we know of in the entire country that is able to put on a pride festival without selling alcohol to the public," Musick said. Musick said the event relies on bars and restaurants to serve alcohol off-site and that the festival has been run without on-site alcohol for years.
Council discussion: Council members and staff raised concerns about enforcement logistics, the burden on businesses and public-safety staffing. The police and fire chiefs told council that managing alcohol at a large outdoor event is challenging and that each approach — allowing patio cups beyond their licensed areas or suspending patios inside the event footprint — creates enforcement and safety trade-offs. Council members noted that many downtown restaurants rely on Bridal weekend as a highly profitable day and that asking businesses to forgo patio sales is a significant ask.
Decision and conditions: After debate council moved to approve the special-event permit and to suspend the patio zone for the duration of the event. The motion passed on recorded roll call. Several council members asked staff and the DDA to work with Bridal and affected businesses on signage, event logistics and a formal post-event review to identify better approaches for future years. The council directed that city staff, the DDA and Bridal organizers coordinate on mitigation and report back after the festival season.
