Committee advances Cody Dean Johnston to full Senate for New Mexico Tech student regent slot

Senator Ramos introduced Johnston and noted his academic pursuits in computer science and engineering with a minor in secondary education; Johnston is expected to graduate in 2027. Johnston told the committee he was raised in Socorro, coaches high school and middle school sports and leads outreach and youth STEM programs at New Mexico Tech.
Sandy Lucero, assistant director for alumni relations at New Mexico Tech, described Johnston as “dedicated, hardworking, and always willing to lend a hand.” Dr. David Green, vice president of student affairs at New Mexico Tech, said the committee had many applicants but that Johnston’s community engagement and service made him stand out.
Senators asked Johnston about recruitment and retention of students in Socorro and how the institution could attract more students and support them to remain in New Mexico after graduation. Johnston said outreach, stronger town–gown connections, and partnerships with employers and national labs could help retain graduates.
Senator Stefanik moved to forward Johnston’s nomination to the full Senate. Roll-call recorded Senators Bergman (yes), Block (aye), Brantley (yes), Gallegos (yes), Stefanik (yes), Stewart (yes), Townsend (yes) and Jaramillo (yes) voting in favor; Senator Lopez and Senator Duhigg were recorded as excused. The committee announced the nomination would move to the full Senate for confirmation later that morning. The full Senate will make the final determination.
