Senate Rules committee advances Gary John Tripp to full‑Senate confirmation for Highlands Regents

The New Mexico Senate Rules Committee voted to advance Gary John Tripp’s nomination to the New Mexico Highlands University Board of Regents to a full‑Senate confirmation after a committee hearing that included sponsor remarks, public supporters and questions from multiple senators.

Senator Campos, who sponsored the nomination, described Tripp as a longtime educator and athletics administrator “dedicated to the future of New Mexico” and said Tripp “continues to bring forward, to ensure that education is at the forefront of everything that he does.”

Tripp, who told the committee he grew up in Las Vegas, N.M., and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from New Mexico Highlands University, summarized his priorities for the regents if confirmed. “I think the dormitories for the students is a primary concern,” Tripp said. He also named expanding athletic programs and housing for faculty and students as areas for growth at Highlands.

Committee members probed how K‑12 board experience would translate to higher education governance. Tripp said he sees similarities with local school boards but suggested more frequent meetings than the regents’ statutory minimum to improve fiduciary oversight: “I noticed that the board of regents minimally meet 4 times a year … I would like to take to the board of regents the possibility of monthly meetings because of the fiduciary responsibility.”

Supporters who spoke in the hearing included Dr. Frank Sanchez, a dentist from Las Vegas, N.M., who said he has known Tripp for more than 50 years and praised Tripp’s ability to “connect with people” and follow up on commitments. Organized supporters were called to stand during Tripp’s appearance; the committee chair reported 11 in‑room supporters and none in opposition.

Senator Stefanieks moved Tripp’s appointment out of committee. The transcript shows a roll‑call in which seven committee members voted in favor, and the chair announced, “With 7 in favor, Mr. Tripp, you will be moving forward for a full senate confirmation later this morning.” The committee did not take a final Senate vote; the nomination will proceed to the full Senate for confirmation.

The nomination hearing focused on student housing, athletics and stewardship of the university’s resources rather than specific policy items or statutory changes. No amendments or conditions were attached by the committee when it moved the nomination forward.
