Senate Bill 409, a measure to add "Football Monday" as a state holiday, was discussed and then tabled by the Senate Indian, Rural and Cultural Affairs Committee.
Sponsor Senator Campos introduced the bill, saying it aimed to create a single-day holiday for the Monday after the Super Bowl. Several members questioned whether such a holiday fit with the historical and civic purpose of existing state holidays and raised concerns about the fiscal and operational costs of adding a paid state holiday.
Senator Solis said she opposed the idea, arguing holidays typically recognize historical or civic significance and that adding a holiday for post-game recovery could open the door to many similar requests. "Most of the other ones that are on here have more historical or, real context type of things," she said.
Sponsor Campos cited national data on workers calling in sick after the Super Bowl in recent years to justify the proposal. Other senators suggested alternatives or joked about a broader "hangover Monday," but one member moved to table the bill. The committee voted on the motion to table; the roll call resulted in a tie and the bill "stays here" in committee rather than advancing.
No additional fiscal language or amendments were adopted during the committee hearing. The measure remains in committee for further action or withdrawal.
